~Giveaway~ Teach Your Kids To Learn Another Language
{Giveaway closed: Congratulations to Beatrix from Beatrix Quills!}
Way back when I was at uni I spent some time learning about bilingual education for kids. I thought, and still think, it was a great idea. We all know that children are little sponges and so teaching them a second language from a young age is a wonderful gift. When I married a man who is half-Chinese I thought it was a done deal, our kids would grow up learning Mandarin.
It turns out it’s easier said than done.
It was a hard slog finding a bilingual school and when I did it was a 40minute drive each way and the kids needed to go at different times during the week. Sigh. Couple that with limited resources for to use at home to reinforce the learning and it all seemed too hard.
Enter Glottogon.

Glottogon is a fantastic online store that sells books for children in a number of languages: Greek, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Chinese and others…
This is one of Bliss’ favourite books – it introduces basic Mandarin terms into the story about being a good friend. We read it a lot!

Glottogon have also released a range of their own books which introduce basic concepts to young children like manners, days of the week and parts of the body. The books are available in English as well as a number of other languages – Bear is often found, cosied up in a char, with these in his hands. They are made from a nice thick material, perfect for little ones with great images and very clear layout. We love them!

Glottogon also run a really fun Facebook page which I highly recommend checking out: Glottogon on Facebook

Being half Spanish myself I would love to teach my kids Spanish and the $50 voucher would go a long way to helping. I love the El Milagro de la Primera Flor de Nochebuena because my kids love anything Christmas. My daughter has a great ear for languages so I know she would benefit from any help learning Spanish.
What a fantastic company! My dream is for my little girl to learn another language when young. I would spend the voucher on Sing and Learn Spanish as she’s only one year old and LOVES nursery rhymes and reading so this would be perfect. Thanks for the chance to enter and GREAT comp:) Pip
I think this is such a great idea – I’ve been toying with the idea of teaching French to my daughter (I speak a moderate amount, but my skills are rusty!) as I re-teach myself, and these books would be a great starting point. Indigo asks me to read her “Le Grande Voyage de Dora” all the time, and seems to love hearing the difference in language.
With $50 to spend on glottogon.com, I’d get:
Les Fruits et Legumes (Indigo loves food!)
Bienvenue Mon Bebe (we want to have a second child, so learning all about baby things would be a great idea!)
Happy Birthday! Joyeux Anniversaire! (Indy turns 1 soon!)

Definitely Italian. The cousins are there and it would be great to share the language with them.
My niece comes from an Italian background and has decided she’d like to go to Italian school. These books are gorgeous and I think something from the educational series e.g. 100 words would be a lovely gift to spur her on.

I am a big believer in reading to babies everyday from day one and have done so with my now 13 month old. He loves his books so I think the Learning with Animals Flashcards in English/Italian would be a new and fun way of teaching him how to read and learn another language, the Our …Board Book Series in english would be perfect for him too with the foam edges, what a brilliant idea!
Our Board Book Series and My Board Book Series! My son has very chewed hand-me-down books from his big sister, and would love to start his own collection! However my mother in law would pick the french collection and start teaching them french early which would be fab!

The selection of INDIGENOUS books is superb. A beautiful introduction to an ancient culture. I would use the voucher for these.
I want to teach my little girl Spanish and she loves to sing and dance. I would get her The sing and learn Spanish Cd book set.
I am a huge fan of Glottogon, thanks for this giveaway
We are teaching our toddler both English and Swedish, English was winning when I was at home with her but now she is in Swedish daycare so Swedish is coming along. At least she might be able to win the Eurovision song contest one day. Couldn’t find anything Swedish at Glottogon but I’d take something French…. OUI!

I would love to buy some of the french books, as my kids learn french at school and this would help them hugely.
Thanks for offering this awesome giveaway!!! I would love the My Body, My Manners & My Week (English). They look like really good books!
These books are gorgeous and I think something from the educational series e.g. 100 words would be a lovely gift to spur her on. Thanks for sharing.

I love the Indigenous books! I’d choose “My Home in Kakadu”, “Wandihnu and the Old Dugong”, “Jirrbal: Rainforest Dreamtime Stories” and “Melly & the Bilby” if I won.

Love it love it love it!! I would definitely be doing Spanish since I’m originally from America (little Mexico!) And I love the selection of products for 2-4 year olds. I’d get a book (maybe the animal one) and some flashcards. I wish I was fluent as I would love to give my kids the gift of a second language.

You hit it right! children are easy to learn language.. especially when you talk to them in a language which you want them to learn.. Like me, I’ve already thought my kid 4 different dialects.. I know she’s not really fluent to speak, but she can understand it fully!

My Miss 4 has been learning how to count (among other things) in different languages at preschool and I love hearing my daughter recite 1-10 in different languages – she thinks she’s pretty clever too (and she is!)! Her favourite teacher just left last week to work as an au pair in Germany for 18 months (very sad to see her go). My stepdad is German so when we made the teacher’s thank you card we wrote some things in German on it (and knew it was correct since my stepdad had told us!). So I’d have to say, I would buy some of the books that are in German. My girls would really get a kick out of being able to say clever things to their Grandad!

This is awesome! I know that if you don’t use the language that often, it doesn’t really stick. So since our closest friends are filipinos and chinese, I would spend it on something for learning chinese. That way my daughter (and maybe me too) can practice it with someone!! I so love this site, thanks for letting me know!

Thanks so much Lousia! I’ve already spent the gift voucher, and a little package of books is hurrying towards my little girl as I type! She’ll love getting more books read to her in French!

Wonderful!!
Drats! I should’ve read this post earlier! In any case, thanks for the info. It’s not been easy for us to raise bilingual children since I can’t really speak Cantonese properly and my husband just reverts to English because it’s easier. It’s also a bit more challenging because many choose to learn Mandarin over a dialect, which I totally get, but that is not my husband’s nor my father’s mother tongue. I have heard of Kai Lan though and it might still be worth exposing my girls to that. On a side note, my hubby actually found the Cantonese translation to the movie The Incredibles and I was amazed how Miss T, who is 3, was happy to watch the entire thing numerous times even though she doesn’t understand it.
