5 Housekeeping Tips For The Domestically Challenged
If you’ve been reading this block for a while or if you’ve ever been to my house then you’ll know that I am no suzy homemaker! Here are five of my tried and true tips to do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to housework…
1. Do it straight away. It will always be easier and take less time if you just tidy up straight away.
2. If caught out, shut the door. What else is there to say but when you get that unexpected visitor or when it all gets to much, grab the nearest washing basket and stuff, run and shut!
3. Flowers are a great distraction…but make sure you bin them when they start to shed/die!
4. A clean and clear kitchen table and toilet go a long way to making your appear in control and clean…ish.
5. Know your strengths and if you can afford it, outsource.
And as with most good things in life, do as I say not as I do.

I’m totally a domestic failure. My best tip is marry someone who values a clean house lots and let them clean (if that is what makes them happy).
Failing that, I’ve started making Amy wash dishes and clean benches. She’s quite good at it.

Ha! Good one, V. I married a good cook. This means we eat well. but I spend a lot of time cleaning the kitchen. Or intending to clean the kitchen.

I am the good cook here, so he cleans my kitchen. Everyone wins! (in my opinion)

I have always been somewhat domestically disinclined…living in a 3 room flat I couldn’t keep things straight so when we moved into a massive rectory, we got a cleaner…saves my sanity…and avoids those “looks” I kept getting from my mother/in-law…
I would love a cleaner, but unfortunately not in the budget just yet.
My husband and I split the chores when we first married. He complains that I don’t do mine enough and I complain he does his too often. In reality, I do all the essential things everyweek but I can be lax on the nonessential and my husband just always chooses the worst times to do the vacuuming – either when I’m trying to listen to things or when the baby is asleep.
I USED to be good at keeping the house tidy and clean, but I feel I’m losing the battle these days. Mind you, hubby and I spent the day cleaning it from top to toe today and I feel so much better for it! I’ve invested in a lot of containers, bins, baskets to keep things tidy and, so far, it’s working! :)

Louisa, this is a very comforting post. I feel I’m in good company! Another tip I read recently is to take mess with you as you move from room to room, filing it away as you go. It does work. When I do it. :-)

I turn the tunes up loud and get motivated!I cant clean without music…it is nearly impossible for me.If my guy is home all day with the tv on there will be a huge mess because I was deprived my music.I do a clock patern I start in the living room, kitchen next, kids room, bathroom,my room.LOL Unfortunate for me by the time I get back to the livingroom my todlers have almost returned it to its former state.

nice tips …:)
Love your tips. I try the straight away tactic too but I’m the only one who does and it gets tiring clearing another’s mess all the time. that’s why I started the closing the door a while back but with a cosy apartment, we’re splitting at the seams so it doesn’t always work. I often pile things around the place especially papers so it looks less messy than the debris of a paper explosion. Basically, I’m a frustrated domestic goddess, though if I were to take on that mantle, hubby might want to see me like Nigella cooking up a sinful storm of delicacies in our tiny kitchen. Guess who’ll end up doing the dishes?
