My Fast Diet Diary: Week 6
Hands down the best thing about this program is that I can enjoy my food on non-fast days. Chocolate fudge cupcake? Yes! Thank you very much. Delicious cheese platter? Yes! Sounds great :) I am becoming very interested in wholefoods and starting to look into the health benefits of more “natural” products – products which have a load of “good fat” and other nutrients that I wouldn’t normally go near because they of the calorie content etc… I love that I can explore these foods and start to think about what cooking with them could mean for our family without being worried about weight gain.
The flipside is that while I’d love to say that the fast days are becoming natural, they aren’t (yet!) What I am finding instead is that they are working my discipline muscle!! Fasting is training me to be self-controlled and willing to delay gratification – I fast twice a week so that 5 days a week I don’t have to fast or calorie count (not advocating gorging on food – just not being ‘worried’ about it). I really value self control as a character trait so there is a peverse satisfaction coming from this part of the process. I very much look forward to the day that this muscle is nice and strong and the fast days are just part of my week – you’ll be the first to know when that time comes! ;)
That brings me to my key learnings from Week 6.
1. Steady Weight Loss - I weighed myself this morning and am down a further 1.1kg since the last time I weighed in (10days ago). I truly feel like this is the holy grail of weight loss and it is awesome!! I am so excited to see this number continue to drop! At this point I can tell that I have lost weight as can my family but in another few weeks it will start to be more noticeable and that is going to be great!! I am staying with my parents for the next fortnight so will weigh in weekly as an indicator of progress on that front.
2. Headaches returned - If you have been reading this blog/following me on Facebook then you will know that it’s been a rough time around these parts with lots of solo parenting, late nights with restless kids and middle of the night wakings. To say I have been exhausted doesn’t come close to describing my mental state. I had some headaches on Thursday with my second fast for the week and I am fairly sure that being tired is a big contributing factor.
3. Milk supply remains uncompromised - I have had a lot of questions about the 5:2 diet as a breastfeeding Mum. Bluey is still mostly fed from me – he is just getting into solids and much more slowly than the other two have. My supply is ample – I am pretty amazed at how much milk I have at this stage of his life and he is a very healthy (ie sumo!) baby. I can’t promise how other breastfeeding mums would go on this diet but for me, it’s working really well and Bluey is extremely well fed :)
4. Feeling really inspired! Even though I am not finding fast days completely natural yet, I am feeling really inspired to learn more about clean eating, low gi foods and natural alternatives to cooking staples – such as oils, flours/grains etc… I have lept into the green smoothie revolution and LOVING how Bliss has embraced them with me. I feel really excited about what this could mean for our family and am enjoying learning about this whole world and way of eating.
Are you doing the Fast Diet or do you have questions about it? I’d like to cover some of the questions I get asked about the program and my experience of it so let me know what you’d like to know!
