Christmas Island

We’ve all heard about the tragedy unfolding on Christmas Island at the moment. This morning I rang the Detention Centre to ask if it was possible to send toys up for the kids. Since that phone call I’ve spent the day collecting donations of new toys to go to the 150+ children currently in detention.

What sprung from a prayer I heard in church yesterday and the idea that I could send a few toys from my cupboard has evolved to having 5 businesses providing toys, a courier company letting us send them at cost and a blogging community coming together to show that these families are not forgotten.

Every person I have spoken to today on Christmas Island has shown great emotion as they spoke of the tragedy, and immense gratitude that people care enough to make this happen.

The following companies have generously offered to contribute:

Tiger Tribe

Just Us Kids

Fairground Child

Tree Top Toys

Crayola

Also supporting this project are BHF couriers who are going to send the delivery at cost price:

More donations are welcome. Specifically,

  • soft toys
  • craft supplies
  • paper supplies
  • dolls
  • toys cars etc..

How can you help?

The courier fee is $930 and we need to raise the funds to cover this. If you are able to help with this you can make a donation via the paypal button on this site.

Let people know about this via whichever methods you prefer: twitter, FB, your blog, the old fashioned telephone – and promote the sponsors as a thank you for their generosity. Any way you can spread the word to get the support and funds we need is greatly appreciated!

Due to the short turnaround we have on this, all sponsors need to be Melbourne based and able to get the items to me by Wednesday lunchtime. There is a limited space for items that we can send at this time.

For those of you who are not Melbourne based you can send or email card of support and encouragement that I will include in the package.

All enquiries, including obtaining delivery details for items & cards can be directed to louisa@everythingisedible.com

You can also keep up to date with happenings via this blog and the Aussie Mummy Bloggers group

Thanks in anticipation of your support.

Note: I would absolutely love to say that these gifts will be there for Christmas but it’s unlikely that they will be able to clear customs that quickly (though I am waiting on a call back from the customs office and am not too proud to beg!). I am told that they will be there early Jan.

  4. Found you via frog ponds rock. Have sent $10 to your freight cost collection and added this page to my FB, for (hopefully!) more donations. Good luck!

  5. Hi Louisa,

Well done for be so proactive to actually help someone. When I served in the Navy many moons ago I went to East Timor to help protect the locals when they were being killed by Indonesian ‘malitia’ . Anyway while there my mother sent clothing and school supplies to me which I was able to distribute to the local community so I know how rewarding it is do help out. They really do appreciate someone giving a damn.

Thank you for giving a damn and converting you feelings for these people into tangible action, a very rare commodity.

If you need any help on the WordPress side give me a yell I will help you as best as I can.

    Kind regards
    Tony

    • Hi Tony
Thanks for your comment & support. I am just so encouraged at how many in our community give a damn and are giving so generously at this time of year. Really wonderful. I might just send you an email re wordpress a bit later. At the moment my head is about to explode! Thanks again,
      Louisa

  8. Being an Christmas Islander (currently abroad), the events of late are rather distressing and such initiatives and support from good Samaritans like yourself really does give faith to all affected. Kudos to you!

    • Hi Jeremy, thanks for your comment. The response from all the Christmas Islanders I have spoken to have been fantastic, they have been so incredibly helpful and certainly all sound very distressed by what’s been happening. I am just so glad we can do something to let everyone on the island know that we care.
