Blog-Life Balance From A Fellow Travellor

Today I read a great post on the lovely Caz’s blog about finding a blog-life balance. This is something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently as I’ve found myself juggling a few different blog projects and wanting to keep this blog, my sanity saver, going.

The thing about blogging is that when you start its so much fun, but the more you get into the more consuming it (can) become.

So, as someone very much on this journey myself I thought I’d share the ways I try to find some balance.

First up, the kids. I was recently inspired by Naomi and Sunny Mummy to create a vision board. Now because there are only so many hours in the day I haven’t actually done this as yet (personal assistant anyone? Would it be wrong to outsource a vision board to a PA? Probably…anyhoo back to the point ) I have this vision board in my mind and dispersed throughout it are photos of the kids to remind me that everything I do in this season of life is about them and there’s not much point in achieving “success” in or from the home if it comes at the expense of the kids and The Architect.

Next up is planning. Before Bear was born I had a bit of a housekeeping rhythm. Goodness knows I am no Martha Stewart but it helps me. Mondays I’d change the sheets, Tuesday do the bathrooms, Wednesday I can’t remember and Friday I’d change over the towels. Everyday I’d do the dishes, kitchen and washing as well as any general tidying. Everyday that is except Thursdays. Thursday was m housekeeping free day which was AWESOME! I absolutely loved having a day in the week where I didn’t have to wash, hang out & put away clothes! I am slowly getting back some rhythm ( mainly around the daily stuff) and it’s good. As part of this I am getting in to the habit of doing the day’s housework before I sit down at the computer.

This brings me to blogging. I have recently started to plan my posts. I do this by thinking about what I’d like too write about through the week and making a note of the post titles in my notebook. Then I let each day come and pick different posts from my list. So far I’ve fount that this really feeds my creativity rather than stifles it and quite a few of my recent posts have sprung up as a result of having this list as starting point.

Today I picked up my iPad (yay!!!) and have implemented Clairey’s suggesting of spending half an hour going through my reader and then clearing anything I didn’t get to & I am now writing this from bed (which is why you may be seeing some formatting issues and no links – I may not have gotten back to fix that up nor have I figured out the best way to blog from this as yet.) I anticipate more nights of this!

Lastly outsourcing. By planning ahead my blogging I have been able to outsource some great posts for my other blog, Mummy Bloggers Blog, and thus share some great content! I also get lots of requests from people wanting to contribute which I love. There’s lots of great stuff about outsourcing! I look forward to being able to outsource other things (a cleaner, please!!) over time :)

I don’t get everything done and I certainly don’t strike a perfect blog-life balance but these things go someway toward keeping my priorities in check.

I haven’t forgotten this great advice from The Small Notebook, just because I can do something, doesn’t mean I should.

Thanks Caz for inspiring this post, if you haven’t read it then I encourage you to check it out (& her second installation) and if you have some tips on how you achieve balance in your life then I would love to hear them!

  1. Thanks for sharing Louisa. It’s really interesting hearing how everyone copes with this – as it seems those of us addicted to this bloggy caper do! (5.30am here – I’m trying the early morning approach today. But I really should be writing a post …..so easily distracted.) I’m starting to feel like I know what I should be aiming for – just have to make it happen. I like your idea of weekly post planning and am very interested that you don’t feel it is making you less creative. I guess trying to find balance is just an ongoing part of life! Hey, way back when I first started reading here I’m sure you said you were doing a thesis as well? Was that right? Can’t even begin to imagine how you could fit that in too!! Thanks for taking up the theme :) Cazxx

  2. Thanks for sharing! I am interested to hear how blogging with the iPad goes; I wanted one for just that reason, especially for moments like when I am waiting for Ellie at dance.
I used to have a housework routine, too. I used to have just a daily routine – not strict but reliable and now that we’re at Mum’s it’s all over the place and we are all paying the price, I believe.
As for blogging I do it at night when the kids go to bed. Sometimes Ellie is up for a little of it but that’s her time to play independently of everyone so I tend to not worry about the fact that I am online while she’s awake.
I am really enjoying these posts, it is interesting to see how everyone else handles this blogging biz!

    • I. Love. My. iPad! The fact that we aren’t showing it to Bliss also means I’m not able to overuse it – I just use it at night to blog read, comment and do a little posting on the couch with the hubs.
